Maria ‘The Bunda’ Mvungi

Towards the end of 2010, Maria was invited to a Salsa class by a friend she met when involved in a hip-hop dance fusion event for a youth project. Salsa was different, exciting, new – giving her another way to express herself. She later discovered Bachata and Kizomba, further fuelling her passion for dance.

She loves that music and dance brings people from different walks of life together. This led her to start an open-air street dance social called Street Salsa in May 2013 as an Open Streets initiative showcasing her passion to the local community in Cape Town. Following positive feedback from such open-air events, she launched Sun-Kissed Salsa in February 2014 – a fortnightly Sunday afternoon social at Sea Point Pavilion.

In August 2013, she joined Alisar Dance Company to start the ‘Bachata Me Crazy’ series. And later in 2014 the first Touch Teams in Cape Town and Johannesburg were launched where she directed the Ladies Touch Teams.

Maria strongly believes that dance is something that is felt; it comes from the heart. Needless to say, it is her happy place.
